Throughthe project Medpellets, and in collaboration with the Salou City Council, we offer every Tuesday and Wednesday in August, from 18:00 to 19:00, at the Nautical Base of Playa de Ponent (Salou), free workshops environmental education to promote care and respect for the environment, especially the marine environment and the beach.
In these workshops, for children aged 10-16 years, participants will learn at first hand and in a practical way the existing problems of plastic waste and microplastics, and the importance of individual actions.
In the workshops, we discuss the importance of the ocean, the causes and consequences of plastic pollution, and we explain what microplastics are. Always from a positive point of view and encouraging participants to focus on solutions.
The children will play the role of researchers to discover the microplastics that are hidden in the sand of the beach and will create a small piece of art to raise awareness with the microplastics and waste they have found.
An awareness-raising activity, wherechildren will havea real experience of caring for the environment and will learn about the importance of taking action, both individually and collectively.
These workshops are part of the Medpellets project, which is developed with the collaboration of the Biodiversity Foundation (Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge), through the Pleamar Program, co-financed by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF).
What is Medpellets?
Medpellets is an eight-month study aboutthe status and dynamics of pellet pollution in the Western Mediterranean.
The aim of the study is to create a knowledge base about the current state of pellet pollution on the south coast of Catalonia and the north of the Balearic Islands. Obtain evidence about the dynamics of this pollution to promote the design of more efficient countermeasures to prevent this primary microplastic from reaching the sea.
So far, thanks to citizen participation and microplastics sampling, we have completed the laboratory analysis of the study and will start with the statistical analysis, in order to, organise a day of presentation of the results of Medpellets project, on September 29th (at 11:30h), in Castell de Vila-seca, Tarragona.
